Artist of the Month- Ann Murray

“I can’t remember a time when I didn’t do some form of art…”
Meet my friend Ann. A like-minded friend who also enjoys pink as her favourite colour 🙂
“When I was little I’d get excited over a pack of crayons. I spent a lot of time drawing with my grandmother and when I was around 13 I took art lessons at Art Instructions Schools, which is the same place Charles Shultz got started in his Snoopy art. All through high school through to today I have continued in my pursuit of the arts.”
Ann is a good friend of mine. An artist that I met through Facebook about 18 months ago. Really, Ann was instrumental in me starting to paint and has always been an encouragement to me. I invited Ann to be the first Artist of the Month as a way to say thank you for all the support, encouragement and online art lessons she has given me and because I believe in her, her art and believe that it deserves to be shared and appreciated like I appreciate it. Isn’t it beautiful?
“For me my art represents who I am. All my feeling and emotions go into every piece I do. I can look at pictures I’ve done and everything comes back to me about what was going on in my life at the time. Each picture is a small snapshot of my life. I have to do art. It isn’t a choice. Without it I feel empty.”

Ann uses many different types of mediums in her art. The above picture is a mixed media though the rest featured here are oil paintings.  She also enjoys other forms of art like embroidery, needle point, art journals, sewing and has a special love for drawing using silverpoint. I have learnt so much about art through my friendship with Ann which I am so grateful for.

“I think my favourite piece of art that I have created is my Lion. I did this at the time when my mum had just passed away. I was thinking about the Lord taking her home and He is the King. The king of the jungle came to mind and I painted this lion as a tribute to my mum.”

I asked her what advice she would give to a new artist. She said, “Just start. Put one line on the paper and continue from there.” She believes that there is no right or wrong way to do art, “All of the great artists started the same way with one line. Don’t give up as it takes time to learn. In time you will come into your own style.”

For anyone who is interested, Ann does commission work mainly of animals though other things by request. She is also very approachable through email if you have any questions: Annmurray50@att.net and prints of her art featured above are now available in the shop. If you are a creator of something original and are interested in being featured as one of the Artists of The Month, email me at rae@knowmoresayless.com 😊
